Lacey's cubicle at KLVN consisted of a worn, laminate top spanning the short distance between two filing cabinets, cushioned, tweed walls in a sickly gray that had been fashionable in 1986, and a rolling office chair that only had two working wheels. Such was the existence of a publicly-funded radio venture. She clicked on the shut-down button on her computer and began to gather her purse and recorder. She had her meeting with the station manager in a few minutes and then would have to race to the courthouse for the coroner’s press conference. To be certain, she’d already cleared with the morning news anchor that they had planned for a live feed.

“Lacey, can I see you for a minute?” Addison poked her head over the top of the wall between their work stations. She smiled, sending warning signals up and down Lacey’s spine.

“Can it wait? I'm late for a meeting with Lionel.”

“Oh, I didn't realize he'd called you. That's what I needed you for. Lionel's office, then.”

Addison didn't wait for Lacey to respond. Instead, she turned away and marched to the station manager's office on the edge of the huge, open floor where all of the station's talent, researchers and interns communed in organized chaos.

When Lionel's secretary had called her yesterday to set up the meeting for this morning, she hadn't said anything about Addison being involved. A frown pulled at the edges of Lacey's mouth as she followed her boss down the narrow hallway between the cubicles. Whatever Lionel wanted, the idea that it could be good news was quickly evaporating. Tossing her bag over her shoulder, she hurried to catch up. “What's going on? Did something happen?”

“Yeah. Something happened, Lacey. In the office.”

Lacey preceded Addison into the poorly-lit space holding a single large, metal desk that looked like a cast-off of an old Soviet regime. She found Lionel Schindler and Nick Bauman waiting for her. Lionel, she'd expected. It was his office, after all. Nick surprised her. The much older man was the station's most generous living contributor, but he seldom came to the station in person. He looked out of place in his black and white satin windbreaker and Elvis-style, gold-rimmed sunglasses. His dyed-black hair lifted in a dated pompadour that seemed even more out of place on a man of his advanced years.

“Good morning, Mr. Johnson,” she said, faking a smile that made her cheeks burn.

“Ms. Williams,” he replied. No fake smile. No smile at all.

“What's going on?” Lacey asked. “Is something wrong?”

“Lacey, we're a little concerned about how close you've become to the Kincaid story,” Lionel stated deliberately, as though he'd carefully chosen and rehearsed the words so many times they'd lost all meaning.

“How close I've become? I'm not sure I follow you.” They couldn't possibly know... or had someone seen Brandy kissing her on the street that day? Her heart flummoxed.

“Why don't you take a seat,” Nick suggested before he pulled off his glasses and took his own advice.

“I'm fine standing, thanks. Why don't you tell me what's going on here?”

Addison released a heavy, sudden breath.
